Issue Position: Military Spending and Policy

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Having served as a Naval Officer both active and in the reserves, I have seen how expensive it is. It is difficult to define much less control waste. There seems to be no limit on how much we should spend on "defense". Now we add to that "Homeland Security".
This has lead to a very profitable industry, which lobbies Congress to spend more and more. We now spend at least $700,000,000,000 per year, which is more than the next seventeen nations combined. We have to take a hard look at this, and gradually cut back.

It's time to bring our military home from Germany, Japan, Korea and Afghanistan leaving small military liaison and training detachments. The first three Countries can easily defend themselves. We can keep some major installations like air bases, supply depots and hospitals. I'll give the Afghanis one more year to get their acts together, including Karzai and the Taliban. For now, I support maintaining our huge base in Kuwait and Naval forces in the Gulf. This will force our friends to seek better relationships with their neighbors including Iran and Pakistan. Sorry, I'm just running for Congress, not President.
